St. Thomas More Cathedral – Arlington Virginia
This hypothetical project was undertaken as part of a sacred architecture competition.
The cathedral would replace the current cathedral of Arlington Virginia with this classical design. Sited at the end of a large courtyard fronting the main road, the cathedral would be visible for miles around. The view from the street would be impressive and inviting. The offices of the diocesan chancery would flank the courtyard and the parish school and bishops residence would remain on site as well. A small set of townhouses for retired clergy and diocesan clergy would be allowed, along with the parish rectory sited next to the cathedral. A public garden would lie to the side of the cathedral and provide a space for quiet reflection.
The plans were drawn by hand and colored with Photoshop. 3D modeling with Sketchup.
